TTCs Suspend Intake for Three Years as Kenya Prepares for DPTE Results

Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) in Kenya are set for a major change in admissions following the decision to suspend the intake of new trainees for a period of three years.

The move affects prospective teacher trainees who were expecting to join TTCs after completing their secondary education. The suspension is part of broader efforts to address the growing number of trained teachers against the available employment opportunities in the education sector.

The Ministry of Education has indicated that the temporary freeze on fresh admissions is intended to help manage the supply of teachers and allow the sector to deal with the existing pool of trained teachers.

The development comes at a time when the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is preparing to release results for the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) programme. KNEC has already published the 2026 DPTE summative examination timetable as part of the examination cycle.

For current teacher trainees, the focus remains on completing their training and meeting the requirements for certification. Those who have already enrolled in teacher training programmes are not the same as fresh applicants affected by the new admissions restrictions.

The three-year pause is also expected to give education authorities time to assess teacher demand across different levels of education and determine the number of teachers required in the coming years.

:

The decision is likely to attract significant attention from KCSE graduates who had planned to pursue teaching as a career. Prospective applicants are therefore advised to follow official announcements from the Ministry of Education, KNEC and relevant teacher training institutions for any changes to the admission arrangements.

The suspension does not necessarily mean that teacher training has been abolished. Instead, it represents a temporary measure aimed at controlling admissions while the government reviews teacher demand and the supply of trained educators.

Further official communication is expected to clarify the implementation of the three-year intake suspension and what options will be available to students who had planned to join TTCs during the affected period.
