Grade 10 Learners Set for KNEC Written Assessments in October 2026

Kenya’s pioneer Grade 10 learners under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) are set to undertake written School Based Assessments (SBA) in October 2026.

The assessment will be administered through the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) as part of the new Senior School assessment framework.

According to the current assessment arrangements, the Grade 10 written assessments are scheduled to begin on 5 October 2026. Schools will be required to administer the assessments and submit the learners’ scores through the KNEC assessment system within the stipulated period.

Different pathways and subject combinations

Grade 10 learners are pursuing different pathways under Senior School, including STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science.

As a result, learners do not necessarily sit for an identical set of subjects. The assessments are linked to the learning areas and subject combinations selected by individual learners.

This means parents and learners should be cautious about unofficial lists circulating online claiming that every Grade 10 learner will sit a fixed number of papers.

:

How schools will administer the assessments

Schools will access the required assessment materials through the official KNEC CBA portal.

School heads will be responsible for accessing the materials, while subject teachers will administer the assessments to learners according to KNEC instructions.

Teachers will also be expected to score the assessments where applicable and enter the required results into the KNEC system.

Schools should therefore ensure that their CBA portal details are working and that teachers are familiar with the assessment guidelines before the exercise begins.

What learners should do

Grade 10 learners should start preparing early by revising the subjects they are currently undertaking.

Learners should also follow instructions from their teachers and avoid depending on unverified information shared on social media.

Parents and guardians can support learners by providing adequate study time and ensuring they have the necessary learning materials.

The October assessment will be an important milestone for Kenya’s pioneer Senior School cohort and will provide KNEC and education stakeholders with valuable information on the implementation of CBC assessment at Grade 10 level.

Schools and learners should continue following official communication from KNEC for the final timetable and any additional instructions before the assessment period.
