The government has officially released the highly anticipated Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) placement results for the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates, marking a major milestone for thousands of students preparing to join institutions of higher learning across the country.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced the placement results on Wednesday, July 8, revealing that 293,869 students have successfully secured admission to universities, colleges and technical institutions for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The latest placement exercise represents a significant increase compared to previous years, when the country recorded an annual average of approximately 70,000 university placements, highlighting the government’s efforts to expand access to higher education and technical training opportunities.
More Time for University Transfer Requests
In a move aimed at giving students greater flexibility, CS Ogamba announced that the inter-institution transfer window has been extended from the usual two weeks to one month.
The extension will allow students who wish to change their institutions or programmes to submit transfer requests through the KUCCPS portal without unnecessary pressure. The ministry believes the additional time will help students make informed decisions based on their career aspirations, financial considerations and personal circumstances.
Breakdown of KUCCPS 2025 Placement Results
According to the placement statistics released by the Ministry of Education, the majority of successful applicants secured places in degree programmes.
The placement figures are as follows:
- 202,133 students have been admitted to degree programmes in public and private universities.
- 28,246 students have secured admission to the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC).
- 500 students have been placed in Diploma in Law (Paralegal) programmes.
- 765 students have been admitted to Kenya Utalii College.
- 875 students have secured places in Secondary Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs).
The ministry noted that these placements reflect the growing diversity of opportunities available to KCSE graduates beyond traditional university education.
Kenya Utalii College Included in KUCCPS for the First Time
One of the major highlights of this year’s placement exercise is the inclusion of Kenya Utalii College in the KUCCPS placement system for the first time.
Previously, students seeking admission to the renowned hospitality and tourism institution were required to apply directly. The new arrangement simplifies the application process and gives learners easier access to quality training in hospitality, tourism and hotel management through the central placement system.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the move, saying it broadens opportunities for students interested in careers within Kenya’s growing tourism and hospitality sector.
More Students Choosing TVET Despite Qualifying for University
CS Ogamba also revealed an encouraging trend that underscores changing attitudes towards technical education.
According to the ministry, 8,915 students who attained the minimum university entry grade deliberately chose to pursue courses in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions instead of enrolling for degree programmes.
The growing preference for TVET reflects increased awareness of the value of practical skills, entrepreneurship and industry-oriented training, which continue to create employment and self-employment opportunities for young people.
The government has consistently invested in TVET institutions as part of its strategy to produce graduates equipped with practical skills required by the labour market.
How Students Can Check Their KUCCPS Placement Results
Students who applied for placement can now log into the KUCCPS student portal using their KCSE index number, KCSE year and password to confirm their placement results.
Once logged in, applicants will be able to view:
- The university, college or institution where they have been placed.
- The specific course or programme they have been admitted to.
- Additional placement details that will guide them during admission.
Students are encouraged to verify their details early and begin preparing for admission.
Universities Directed to Issue Admission Letters
Following the release of the placement results, CS Ogamba directed all universities and colleges to immediately begin processing admission letters and issuing joining instructions to successful applicants.
The ministry said institutions should ensure that students receive the necessary admission documents in good time to enable them to prepare adequately before reporting.
Admission letters will contain important information including reporting dates, fee structures, accommodation arrangements, registration requirements and orientation schedules.
Higher Education Financing Portal Now Open
The Education Cabinet Secretary further announced that the Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal has officially been opened for first-time applicants.
This allows newly placed students to begin applying for government scholarships, tuition funding and student loans to support their higher education.
Students have been advised to submit their applications early to avoid last-minute delays that could affect their admission and registration.
Over 980,000 KCSE Candidates Were Eligible
According to data released by the Ministry of Education, 980,535 candidates who sat the 2025 KCSE examination were eligible to apply for placement through KUCCPS.
Out of this number, 270,508 candidates attained the minimum C+ grade required for direct university admission.
KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Dr Agnes Mercy Wahome said the placement exercise successfully catered for 81 per cent of all students who attained a C+ and above.
However, she noted that demand for some highly competitive degree programmes continued to exceed the available training capacity in universities.
As an example, Dr Wahome disclosed that approximately 6,500 students applied for Bachelor of Medicine programmes, yet universities across the country had capacity to admit only 702 students.
She explained that limited training facilities, specialised equipment and accreditation requirements continue to restrict the number of students who can be admitted into certain professional courses.
HELB Opens Undergraduate Loan Applications
Meanwhile, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced that applications for Undergraduate Subsequent Loans are now open.
At the same time, students joining universities for the first time can begin submitting applications for government scholarships and student loans through the Higher Education Financing portal.
The government has urged all successful applicants to complete both their admission and financing applications as early as possible to ensure a smooth transition into universities, colleges and other tertiary institutions.
The release of the KUCCPS placement results marks the beginning of a new academic journey for thousands of Kenyan students. With admission processing now underway and financing applications officially open, successful candidates are expected to prepare for the next phase of their education as they pursue careers in various professional and technical fields.
