TSC Promotion Interviews to Begin September 8 as Primary Teachers Take the Lead
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced that interviews for its 2026 teacher promotion exercise will officially begin on September 8, 2026, with primary school teachers being the first group to appear before interview panels.
The promotion exercise is targeting 34,016 vacancies across primary schools, secondary schools, teacher training colleges, special needs institutions and Curriculum Support Officer positions. The vacancies were advertised under TSC Adverts 78/2026 to 107/2026, with the exercise supported by a funding allocation of Sh2 billion.
TSC Promotion Interview Schedule
According to the operational roadmap, the Commission will invite shortlisted candidates between August 31 and September 11, 2026.
Primary school promotion interviews will run from September 8 to September 15, while interviews for post-primary teachers and Curriculum Support Officers are scheduled for September 17 to September 25.
The exercise follows a sensitisation programme involving TSC headquarters officials and regional, county and sub-county directors responsible for overseeing the recruitment and promotion process.
Thousands of Promotion Opportunities
The 2026 promotion exercise covers several teaching and administrative grades. The largest allocation is for 13,490 Senior Teacher II positions, followed by 5,956 Senior Master IV vacancies and 4,210 Senior Teacher I positions.
Other advertised positions include Deputy Headteachers, Deputy Principals, Senior Masters, Principals, Senior Principals, Chief Principals, Senior Lecturers and Curriculum Support Officers.
This makes the exercise one of the largest promotion programmes undertaken by TSC in recent years.
How Teachers Will Be Scored
TSC has developed standardized score sheets to assess candidates during the interviews. Depending on the position, candidates can earn marks for several factors, including administrative experience, length of stay in the current grade, age, TPAD performance, academic qualifications, professional engagements and co-curricular activities.
Administrative experience carries significant weight, particularly for leadership positions. Teachers who have previously served as principals, deputy principals, headteachers, deputy headteachers or in acting capacities may earn additional marks if they have the required documentation.
The length of time a teacher has remained in the current grade is also an important consideration. Teachers who have spent many years in the same grade can earn more points under this category.
TPAD Performance
Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) results form another component of the assessment.
According to the published scorecard, teachers can earn up to 10 marks based on their average TPAD performance over the previous three years. Candidates with ratings of 81 percent and above receive the maximum marks under this category.
Academic qualifications also contribute to the final score, although their weighting varies depending on the position being applied for.
Professional activities such as serving as a KNEC examiner, participating in KICD programmes, training other teachers, publishing educational materials or taking part in other recognised educational programmes can also earn candidates additional marks.
Co-curricular participation is another consideration, with teachers receiving marks depending on the level at which they have participated.
Age and Experience
The emphasis on age and years spent in the current grade has generated debate among teachers.
TSC’s position is that the scoring system is intended to address long-standing career stagnation among teachers who have spent many years in the same job grade. The approach gives experienced teachers, particularly those approaching retirement, an opportunity to progress before leaving public service.
However, some younger teachers have expressed concerns that the heavy weighting of age and experience could make it difficult for them to compete with older colleagues, even when they have strong academic qualifications and excellent TPAD results.
The debate therefore centres on how the promotion system should balance experience and loyalty with performance, academic advancement and the need to give younger teachers opportunities for career growth.
Acting Experience
Another important aspect of the 2026 promotion scorecard is the recognition of teachers who have served in acting administrative positions.
Teachers who have officially performed duties such as acting headteacher, deputy headteacher, principal or deputy principal may benefit significantly if they can provide evidence of their appointments and responsibilities.
The system recognises that many teachers have gained practical leadership experience while serving in acting positions, even before receiving substantive appointments.
What Shortlisted Teachers Should Do
Teachers preparing for the interviews are advised to organize all relevant documents before appearing before the panels.
These may include academic certificates, deployment or acting letters, TPAD records, professional engagement certificates, co-curricular certificates and other documents supporting information provided during the application.
Candidates should also be prepared to explain their professional achievements, leadership experience, classroom performance and contribution to school improvement.
The September promotion interviews will therefore be an important opportunity for thousands of teachers seeking career progression.
With 34,016 positions available, primary school teachers will be the first to undergo interviews from September 8, followed by post-primary teachers and Curriculum Support Officers later in the month.
The outcome of the exercise will determine which teachers move into higher grades and leadership positions as TSC continues its efforts to address career progression and promotion opportunities within the teaching service.
