As thousands of learners prepare to transition to Grade 10 under Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), parents and students are seeking clarity on the different categories of senior schools and what the classifications mean for placement.

Under the new senior school system, learners will transition from Grade 9 to Grade 10 and pursue pathways aligned with their interests, abilities and career aspirations. Senior schools are categorised into C1, C2, C3 and C4, with the categories broadly reflecting the level and scope of resources, infrastructure and programmes available in the institutions.

What are C1 schools?

C1 schools are the institutions formerly associated with national schools. They are generally the most established senior schools, with extensive infrastructure, facilities and a wider range of subject combinations.

They are expected to admit learners from across the country and offer a broad selection of pathways and career-oriented programmes.

Because of their resources and competitive nature, C1 schools are likely to attract high demand from learners seeking placement in well-established institutions.

What are C2 schools?

C2 schools largely correspond to the former extra-county schools.

They serve learners from wider geographical areas and are expected to provide a range of senior school pathways and subject combinations.

While they may not have the same breadth of resources as C1 institutions, many C2 schools have established infrastructure and facilities capable of supporting learners pursuing different academic and technical interests.

What are C3 schools?

C3 schools broadly comprise the former county schools.

These institutions primarily serve learners within their counties and surrounding areas. Under the senior school system, they will provide opportunities for learners to pursue different pathways depending on the programmes and facilities available at individual schools.

The classification does not necessarily mean that a C3 school is inferior academically. Rather, the categories are intended to help organise senior schools according to their capacity, resources and scope of admission.

Which pathways will learners pursue?

At Grade 10, learners will select pathways based on their interests, abilities and career goals.

  • STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
  • Social Sciences — including humanities, business and related subjects
  • Arts and Sports Science — covering creative arts, performing arts and sports-related areas

Within these broad pathways are different tracks and subject combinations from which learners can choose.

What should parents consider?

Parents have been advised to focus less on the school category alone and more on whether a school offers the pathway and subject combination that matches a learner’s aspirations.

Factors such as the learner’s interests, strengths, career ambitions, school facilities, location and available subject combinations should all be considered when making a Grade 10 school choice.

The transition marks a major shift from the previous Form One placement system, as CBC places greater emphasis on learner interests, competencies and career progression.

For learners and parents, understanding the C1, C2 and C3 classifications is therefore important when reviewing available senior schools and making informed choices for Grade 10.
