The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is mandated with the management of national examination in Kenya and regularly issues updates these exams. This KNEC Updates on National Examinations are important to education stakeholders including parents, students, teachers and school administrators.

The Kenya National Examinations Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE) has issued important updates in a number of subjects including:

  • Payment of KNEC contracted professionals who participated in the 2025 National Examinations.
  • Release of Examination timetables for KCSE and KJSEA.
  • Registration procedures for candidates sitting for National Exams this year 2026.

Below is a detailed breakdown of these important updates.

Payment of Contracted Professionals for 2025 National Examinations

The examination Council contracts teachers and other professionals in the administration of the national exams every year. These professional include supervisors, invigilators, centre managers, security personnel, examiners and Markers.

Last year, the Kenya National Examinations Council engaged 77,000 professionals to support in the administration and marking of the National Exams.

The council as of today has delayed the payment of these contracted personels citing budgetary constraints and cash flow constraints affect the release of funds from the treasury.

The government had given these professionals an assurance that the money will be paid as soon as the budgetary allocation is issued to that effect since paying them remains their top most priority.

Reports from the treasury as of now indicates that the examination body has been granted Ksh.1 billion to facilitate payment of these professionals.

It is important for the government and general public to note that these examination officials are very significant for various reasons including:

  1. Supervising Examination Centres– Supervisors man exam centres and are the ones answerable if things go wrong in that centre. Many supervisors have lost their jobs as a result of improper supervision of the national exams. Therefore, these teachers jeopardize their jobs for the sake of the examination council.
  2. Invigilating Candidates during exams in examination centres.
  3. Marking examination scripts which is a tiring exercise where teachers are subjected to harsh conditions marking till late and they don’t receive their dues in time. This demoralizes those who are engaged in marking.
  4. Ensuring Examination Security

These professionals ensure that exams are conducted fairly and in a transparent manner.

Registration of Candidates for National Examinations

Registration of candidates for national exams is another important update from KNEC for this year. School heads are responsible for the registration of candidates in their schools.

Requirements for Registration of Candidates

As schools heads are on with the registration of candidates for this year’s exams and assessments, they should take note of the following as the requirements from the Kenya National Examinations Council that schools must provide.

  • Correct Candidate names as indicated in their birth certificates.
  • Passport sized photograph to be uploaded on individual accounts during registration.
  • Correct subjects entries since uploading wrong subjects will impact candidates negatively.
  • Candidate citizenship indicated clearly.
  • School based assessment scores for KJSEA candidates.

In addition to the above requirements, candidates in grade nine must be listed in the grade 9 database and have valid results from Kenya Primary School Education Assessment. Similarly, candidates must be in possession of school based Assessment scores for grade 7 and 8.

Important notes to schools

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC has warned schools against the following;

  1. Avoid uploading invalid/incorrect details for candidates. Schools have been asked to ensure that the details are accurate and confirm with official documents like birth certificates.
  2. Registration deadlines are strictly taken into account by the examination body. Therefore, schools should ensure that they work within the stipulated deadlines.
  3. Register candidates who are eligible and meets the eligibility criteria as outline by KNEC in this document Common KCSE & KJSEA Registration Mistakes Schools Should Avoid
  4. School heads who fail to register candidates for not paying certain amounts not outlined in the ministry of education and the examination council will face the law.
