Grade 10 CBC Pathways: Subjects, School Selection and Whether Learners Can Change Pathways
The transition from Grade 9 to Grade 10 marks an important stage in Kenya’s Competency-Based Education (CBE) system. Learners entering Senior School are required to choose a pathway, subject combination and preferred Senior Schools based on their interests, abilities and future career aspirations.
The Grade 10 selection system provides three main pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science. Learners select their preferred combinations from those offered by participating Senior Schools.
1. STEM Pathway
The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pathway targets learners interested in sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics and technical careers.
It includes areas such as Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences and Technical Studies. Depending on the school and available combinations, learners may pursue subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Studies, Agriculture and various technical subjects.
STEM can prepare learners for careers including medicine, engineering, ICT, laboratory sciences, architecture, agriculture and other technical professions.
2. Social Sciences Pathway
This pathway focuses on society, humanities, business, communication and languages. Learners can pursue subjects and combinations involving areas such as History and Citizenship, Geography, Business Studies, Literature and languages.
It can provide a foundation for careers such as law, teaching, journalism, business, economics, communication, public administration and related fields.
3. Arts and Sports Science
This pathway is designed for learners with talents and interests in creative and sporting activities. Areas include Fine Arts, Music and Dance, Theatre and Film, and Sports and Recreation.
It can lead to opportunities in sports, coaching, music, film, acting, creative arts, entertainment and sports management.
Can a Learner Change Their Grade 10 Pathway?
Yes, pathway or subject changes can be possible, but they are subject to the applicable Ministry of Education procedures and school capacity.
Learners and parents should therefore make the initial selection carefully rather than assuming that a pathway can easily be changed after reporting to Senior School.
A change may also depend on whether the receiving school offers the preferred pathway and subject combination and whether there is available space.
During the placement process, learners can select their preferred pathway, subject combination and Senior Schools through the official system. The Ministry uses factors including learner preferences, career interests, assessment performance and available school capacity when determining placement.
Similarly, parents who wish to change their initial pathway selection can do so through school heads. Here they will be required to reset their initial selection and select their preferred pathway afresh.
This should be done before the elapse of the set deadline for selection which is 11th September 2026 at 11:59.
What Should Parents and Learners Consider?
Parents should avoid choosing a pathway simply because it is perceived to be more prestigious. The best choice should reflect the learner’s abilities, interests, talents and intended career direction.
Learners should also confirm that the Senior School they choose actually offers their preferred subject combination.
The Grade 10 pathway is therefore an important decision, but it should be viewed as part of a learner’s wider education journey rather than simply a label that determines their entire future.
